Early referral, better outcomes

Industry research consistently shows that injured workers whose claims include early nurse case management return to work significantly sooner — while delayed involvement can lengthen recovery time and drive up claim costs.

One point of contact

A case manager keeps the claimant, providers, employer, and adjuster on the same page — preventing the miscommunication and scheduling gaps that stall recovery and inflate claims.

A covered benefit

Under Michigan's no-fault system, physician-ordered case management is a reimbursable benefit when reasonably necessary for an injured person's care, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Common Questions

Case management, explained

New to working with a case manager? Here are the questions we hear most.

What exactly does a case manager do?

A case manager is a clinical advocate who coordinates every moving part of an injury claim: assessing the claimant's needs, scheduling and attending medical appointments, monitoring recovery progress, and keeping providers, the family, the employer, and the adjuster informed. The goal is simple — the right care, at the right time, without gaps or duplication.

When is the right time to refer a case?

The earlier, the better. Early case management involvement is consistently linked to faster recoveries and sooner return to work, while late involvement tends to mean longer claims and higher costs. Referral is especially valuable for catastrophic injuries, claims involving multiple providers or specialists, claimants with complicating health conditions, missed appointments, or a recovery that seems to have stalled.

Who pays for case management services?

In Michigan auto no-fault claims, physician-ordered case management is generally reimbursable through the claimant's personal injury protection benefits when reasonably necessary for their care, recovery, and rehabilitation. In worker's compensation claims, services are typically authorized and paid by the carrier or employer. We're happy to walk through coverage questions for a specific case — just ask.

Does case management really make a difference?

Yes. Claims analyses in the worker's compensation industry have found that a majority of injured workers referred to nurse case management are back to work within a few months — a markedly better rate than claims without it. Beyond the numbers, families consistently tell us the biggest difference is having one knowledgeable person guiding them through an overwhelming process.

Can case management help beyond medical appointments?

Absolutely. Depending on the case, we coordinate attendant care, home and workplace accessibility modifications, medical equipment, transportation, physician referrals, and return-to-work planning — the practical pieces that determine whether someone can truly regain independence.
